Abstract

The recent article by D. Hutchison (Volume 15, No. 2) raising some questions regarding the problems and needs in earthquake engineering for structures is timely and should create much discussion. Engineers
involved in the design of bridges have been aware of the need to look critically at their research activities and review the direction needed
for future efforts. During the visit of a group of sixteen American bridge designers and researchers in December 1981, the opportunity was taken to undertake this review in a semi-formal three day workshop held in Wairakei.
